Sweet Natalie - Posted by: Marlene, Aug 27,1999 Well, it pays to be nice to the nurses! The nurse sneaked me into the social worker's office so I could surf the net for awhile. Natalie came very close to dying over the weekend. Her kidneys, lungs and heart were all being supported by some piece of technology. To make matters worse, her pupils were slow to react. We hoped it was because of all the sedatives, etc... she was on, but there was a concern about her neurological status, because of all the stress on her organs. However, they did some tests and it appears that she is okay. Scary stuff when you mess with the brain, (and as it turns out, the liver too. These 2 organs can't regenerate or be supported by technology). As of yesterday, it appears that she is fighting this mystery virus and is making a comeback. I'll tell ya, I will never take the immune system for granted again!! She's still on the vent, etc... but her labwork and machine settings are improving. She's starting to make her own white blood cells again. Boy, are those important little suckers! I suspect that we'll be in the ICU for another 2 weeks and that's if everything goes well. I decided today that when she gets out I will not put her back on the 6 mp. Her liver is slighly enlarged and 6mp is flushed through the liver. Also, I don't see how she could make it through a winter, be around other children AND stay virus free. I also decided that I'm going to find a GI doc that will work with me regarding using both alternative and conventional meds. When there's game playing, I think the parent ultimately loses. Thanks for all your prayers. I swear she's hearing them!! Marlene |
